Will Buddy Hield fill the void of Klay Thompson for the Warriors?

07/13/2024

Buddy Hield recently signed with the Golden State Warriors as a replacement for Klay Thompson, as he left and signed with the Dallas Mavericks. Now that Hield is with Golden State to form the "Splash Buddies" with Stephen Curry, we will be predicting if he can fill the void of Klay Thompson's absence.

Last season with the Pacers and the 76ers, Hield averaged 12/3/3 shooting 43% from the field and 38% from three. Hield has emerged into being the best shooter on every team he's been on, so it might look different in Golden State. Hield and Curry statistically speaking are the two best three point shooters in the league, as they are number one and two in most three pointers made since Hield came into the league.

Last season with the Warriors however, Thompson averaged 19/3/2 while shooting 43% from the field and 39% from three. Klay is overall one of the greatest shooters that this game has ever seen, but he has taken a step back after his injuries and we just don't know how good he will be entering his age 34 season. He will also be taking a back seat with Luka and Kyrie being the top two options, but this is exactly what Klay could be used for. Maybe he needs to be the guy that spaces out the floor for the more ball-dominant players, and he can just hit open threes.

Now back to the main question. We don't think that Buddy Hield can impact the team as much as Klay did, but not because of his numbers. Hield can easily average 5+ threes per game on this Warriors team. It's just the synergy that Klay had with the entire Warriors roster, that we just can't predict that Hield will have, so he can't impact the team as much as Klay Thompson did over the course of his career.
